Food-to-go is booming right now – and when it comes to chilled choices, sandwiches, paninis and wraps are dominating our purchases. That’s according to new research from packaging specialists Huhtamaki and it means the potential returns for businesses targeting the market are significant.
Hot food, admittedly, currently edging its colder rivals in the popularity stakes – 38% to 33% – but what’s a mere 5 per cent gap in a market worth over £20bn in the UK? And with three-quarters of consumers buying food-to-go at least once a week, that’s equivalent to 24 million people!
Food-To-Go: A Market That’s Going Places
From coffee shops to retailers and newer ‘fast-casual’ concepts, the food-to-go market remains on course for further growth – as high as 5 per cent in 2015. For your business to tap into this particular sector zeitgeist, it’s important to understand the driving factors behind the trend.
It’s no surprise convenience is a big factor – from the ideal location to the optimum product range. For example, consultants HIM found that convenience and Metro-style retail stores are as likely to benefit from this trend as fast-casual concepts such as Freshii and Pure that are proving a big hit.
Don’t forget – it’s not all about sandwiches, paninis and wraps either. Of course, the research does show their incredible value. But snacks and drinks are also part of the food-to-go mix – 62 per cent of consumers buy a drink with their food. Don’t underestimate the power of those impulse sales!
